The community of Air Ronge contains within its boundaries, a variety of lands occupations such as residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, public open space and undeveloped land. Residential development is confined to a small subdivision of 82 lots, in the southern portion of the community, east of Highway 2. Small pockets are also located north of the Montreal River, where a small mobile home park and a few permanent residents are established and along the south bank of the Montreal River line a handful of substandard houses. Recent major residential development has occurred along the new subdivision of 140 lots as well as the old airport area. Industrial areas are confined to lands adjacent to Highway 2. Industrial activity in Air Ronge includes light industrial lumber yard, bulk petroleum depot, transport, flooring/carpet, recycling depot, gravel/rock, plumbing and heating, road construction, painting, drywalling, commercial glass, eavestroughing, bus lines, machining repairs, sawmill as well as heavy industrial use such as Department of Highways yard and garage, construction contractor's yard, mineral exploration. Commercial areas are located exclusively along the highway strip with four gas stations, a motel, laundromat, two snowmachine and boat sales businesses, tire shop, furniture store, a beauty salon, berry and craft, a convenience store, fish processing, hardware retail store, auto parts store, restaurant/craft shop. A few spots of institutional land is scattered along the highway strip such as provincial government warehouse, Northlands College lab, maintenance, a library and a tourist information booth. The majority of community services in Air Ronge originate from the Town of La Ronge. In terms of transportation, Air Ronge was the former location of one of the major airstrips serving northern Saskatchewan. As use and demand increased, the airstrip was relocated to a major airport north of La Ronge. The area of the old airstrip has become a residential area in the most part. Air Ronge is served by a daily schedule service from the south and north. Therefore, Air Ronge is a major destination for north and south flowing passengers and cargo. Highway 2, the major artery north of Prince Albert runs through Air Ronge. It is a major means of access to and from northern Saskatchewan for freight, goods and visitors to the area. There are huge volumes of traffic moving on a daily basis through the community. Communication services are provided by a weekly newspaper, The Northerner provides a source of local news and the surrounding area. Daily newspapers from the south are available at news stands. A local radio station, Missinipi Broadcasting Corporation provides services encompassing northern Saskatchewan. As well CBC radio provides radio services originating from Regina along with a FM station from Edmonton is accessible. There is also increasing demand and use of computer means of electronic communication through RongeNet. The community of Air Ronge is administered by the Northern Village of Air Ronge for local government purposes in tax assessment, land administration and regulations. Some services are provided by the Town of La Ronge. These are served on a per capita cost basis. The population of Air Ronge is 800 residents with increasing numbers as further residential development occurs. Employment opportunities are sought within the local businesses of Air Ronge along with opportunities in La Ronge, the mining companies, industry, government, non-government agencies, banks, stores, educational institutions, construction, hotels, restaurants, day care, and hospital. In the Air Ronge region, tourism has become of significant economic benefit. The success is related to the excellent recreational resource qualities of the region, including sport fishing, hunting, abundance of wilderness and semi-wilderness areas along with beautiful scenery. There are five main types of tourist activity in the region, consisting of camping, fishing, hunting, skiing and canoeing. There is increasing activity by tourists every year. Educational facilities are available in Air Ronge including Gordon Denny school. It is an inexpensive yet elegantly designed school for elementary students. The school boasts a lovely gym and modern computer room and spacious library. The classrooms are large and the playground has turf and play equipment. The school strives to reflect the multiple cultural representation in the community and school. Enrolment at this school is approximately 250 students. Grades six to twelve are provided at Churchill High School in La Ronge. Post Secondary education is available through the Northlands College and NORTEP/NORPAC, as well as university accredited classes through the Lac La Ronge Indian Band. Air Ronge has been experiencing rapid change as a major new influx of residential development arises.
