Black Lake is located on Chicken Indian Reserve No. 224 occupied by members of the Stony Rapids Indian Band. It is situated approximately 115 miles east of Uranium City in the north shore of Black Lake. It is connected with Stony Rapids, approximately 15 miles to the northwest, by an all-weather gravel road. On-reserve population of the Black Lake Band is 560 people according to Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.
As with most northern communities, traditional activities such as hunting, trapping, fishing and guiding provide the largest means of income. There are also the occasional government job and Band jobs. Trades, services, transportation and construction provide other means of employment. There are also employment opportunities in the mining industry.
Educational services provides the community from nursery to grade twelve.
There is a Northern Store, a community hall, a health clinic, a church and two pool halls in Black Lake. A new health clinic with attached residences has been recently built. Planes land on the lake. The nearest air strip for wheel aircraft is Stony Rapids.
