Community Index
Buffalo Narrows is considered the government and service centre for northwestern Saskatchewan. The first homestead was established in 1895 making this community the newest. Early economic activities were fishing, trapping and mink ranching in terms of economic subsistence. The residents are diverse in the cultural backgrounds of Cree, Dene and Metis as well as Euro-Canadian and Asian descent.

The community is situated on a narrows between Peter Pond and Churchill Lakes on the Churchill River. The name is derived from when the buffalo roamed the country and crossed the lake on these narrows.

Buffalo Narrows is central to many of the smaller surrounding communities at the northern end of Highway 155 road corridor. Other means of travel is via air with a modern airport handling up to small jet size.

Role of government began with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in 1948 administering the village until 1965 when a local community was formed by provincial act. By 1972 the Department of Northern Saskatchewan was created with rapid infrastructure developing.

The population of Buffalo Narrows is approximately 1,200 serving as a regional government centre with full or part time offices including Social Services, Highways, Justice, Environment and Resource Management, Sask Power, Sask Tel, Municipal Government, Northern Affairs Economic Development, and Human Resource Development Canada.

Banking is available through the Northwest Credit Union with various services including CMHC approved mortgages.

Education is provided by a K-12 school with cross cultural component along with entreprenuerial and science courses served by the Northern Lights School Division. Northlands College and Dumont Technical Institute offer adult education opportunities from a major provincial training complex with residential options for outlying communities.

A recreational complex offers a gymnaiusm, hockey arena and curling rink while outdoor facilities feature track and field facilities, a ball diamond, a children's playground and a beach. The friendship centre provides personal and and recreational services. A number of small businesses provide services to the resident population, the mines and the outlying area.

Employment is derived from the mines run by Cameco and Cogema, as well as forest harvesting and silviculture activities. Other residents work in industries such as commercial fishing and the locally owned fish processing plant.

The growing community of Buffalo Narrows is bound to improve its position as the major centre in the northwest area.
