Sandy Bay is located near the Saskatchewan/Manitoba border about 150 kilometers north of Flin Flon. It is situated on the Churchill River near the Island Falls Hydro-Electric Generating Station.

Sandy Bay is administered by the Northern Village of Sandy Bay. The town boasts a health clinic, a Rehabilitation Centre, a Recreation Board and a K-12 school. The community also enjoys sewer, water, electrical and communication services.

The community of Sandy Bay has a population of about 1,000 residents. Of this total, approximately one quarter of the people are members of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation. At the present, much of the linkage between Sandy Bay and the developed south occurs through Flin Flon and Manitoba communications systems.

Sandy Bay has grown dramatically over the past twenty years. Initially situated further downstream on the Churchill River, the original residents of Sandy Bay were encouraged to relocate near the proposed site of the Island Falls Generating Station to provide a source of cheap labour for the construction of the Island Falls development.

Over the past, the existing community grew in size as the Island Falls Generating Station altered traditional lifestyles by drastically affecting the trapping, hunting and fishing areas of the local people. For the most part employment opportunities at Island Falls were restricted to the Island Falls townsite residents.

In 1966, the Island Falls Generating Station switched to an automatic system whereby the majority of employment was lost. The resident population of Sandy Bay took up much of the employment slack left by the vacating Island Falls residents.

In 1965, the community of Sandy Bay became a Local Community Authority with local government control overseeing responsibility for the operations within the community. Later in the 1980's Sandy Bay was designated as a village with the increasing population and infrastructure.
