The northern hamlet of Stony Rapids has a population of 233. The hamlet office phone is 439-2173. Their facsimile is 439-2098. Stony Rapids is an off- reserve hamlet of about 300 people. The majority of people are only able to come in and out of the community by plane, as Stony Rapids is a fly-in community. In the wintertime there is a winter road that may be used from Points North up to Black Lake and on to Fond du Lac.
There are lots of trout, jack fish, and walleye here in Stony. Also we have lots of caribou, rabbit, ptarmigan and other wildlife. People use the wildlife here to supplement their incomes and food supplies; as well as to offset expenses here.
There are two stores. One is the Northern Store, which has a selection of clothing, household appliances, toys, games and hunting equipment. The other store is Scott's General Store, which is a snowmobile outlet, grocery and hardware store. Scott's also has a Prince Albert Credit Union service that allows those with accounts to do banking. There is a Post Office here and mail usually comes three times a week.
The majority of people are Catholic, but there is no resident priest. The priest visits occasionally, so regular church attendance is not common. There is also a Baptist preacher here in Stony, and he has Sunday school lessons and Bible study in his home every week if possible.
Stony Rapids school is within the Northern Lights School Division. The school has only 35 students. Many students go to Father Porte Memorial Dene school in Black Lake, SK. The Stony Rapids School only goes from Kindergarten to grade nine. There are three teachers on staff: a K-2 teacher, a 3-6 teacher, and a 7-9 teacher who is also the Principal. There is a part time Dene teacher/Tutor, and Secretary/Librarian. There is an off-reserve worker who is a referral person for parents of kids aged 0-6 years whom also works in the school.
