Uranium City is located in the northwest corner of Saskatchewan 450 miles northwest of Prince Albert, 450 miles northeast of Edmonton and 30 miles south of the North West Territory-Saskatchewan boundary.

Lake Athabasca in the 19th Century was an old fur trapping strait. Alexander Mackenzie on his trip to the Arctic traveled along Lake Athabasca. There was little or no activity in the area outside of trapping and prospecting until gold was discovered at the site later to be known as Goldfields.

In 1946 Eldorado Mining and Refining Corporation started exploratory work in the area for radioactive minerals. The mine at Gunnar was still operating at this time. In 1959, Eldorado discovered an ore body near Ace Lake and work started on the sinking of mine shafts.

In 1952, the provincial Government decided to establish a town in order to service the mines in the Beaverlodge uranium area. Construction began in 1952 by the provincial Government with the input of Eldorado Nuclear Ltd.

Some of the reasons Eldorado went along with the provincial Government in the construction and establishment of the town were probably due to added community safety off the industrial site in case of military attack; avoidance of the many headaches and expenses associated with administration of a community by a private company; presence of a more desirable site off Martin Lake than in their own area. When other companies entered the picture, Eldorado changed their attitude, probably partly because of a fear of being required to carry the financial load for companies other than themselves. However, the factors mentioned above were, and still are as valid as they were originally.

At first, most of the residences in Uranium City were simply tents, but later on, buildings were constructed. During the winter of 1952 almost all of the buildings that were capable of being moved from Goldfields were hauled to the Uranium City townsite because it was a lot easier than constructing new buildings. During the spring break-up when the barges were operating the town grew very rapidly.

The government realized the difficulties of building on the north and tried to keep regulations at a minimum with the main ones being: all lots must be leased from the Crown in the first instance, although they will be sold and the occupant given title to the land; all persons acquiring a lot must erect a dwelling valued at no less than $53,000 within 18 months.

Due to the closure of the mines in the surrounding area in the early 80's in Uranium City, the town has been drastically reduced in population and services. Uranium City was later designated as a northern settlement and now has a remaining population of 212.
