Keewatin Career Development Corporation - General
The Keewatin Career Development Corporation (KCDC) is a non-profit, umbrella organization of career service providing agencies in Northern Saskatchewan. The corporation was formed in March 1996 to propose and implement a project for development and support of networked career services in northern Saskatchewan. This project was approved and jointly funded under the Canada-Saskatchewan Strategic Initiatives Agreement. Start up was in May 1996. The initial Strategic Initiatives Project was completed in March 1999. Since that time, we have continued to support the northern career services network under a contract with Saskatchewan Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training.
KCDC member agencies are the following K-12, Post-secondary, Metis, and First Nation Pathways:
- Athabasca Region Dene First Nations
- Dumont Technical Institute
- Ile-a-la-Crosse School Division
- Jim Brady Development Corp.
- Meadow Lake Tribal Council
- Methy Metis Pathways
- Northcote Metis Pathways
- Northern Lights School Division
- Northern Region III Metis Pathways
- Northlands College
- Saskatchewan Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training
- Woodland Cree
- Saskatchewan Education K-12
- NORTEP/NORPAC
The corporation is directed by a board which is representative of these organizations. The formation of KCDC, with its mission to improve career service delivery in the north, marks the first time these northern career service providing agencies have worked jointly on a project in which they all have equal decision making power. This structure has made possible the process of identifying and working toward common goals.
Because of KCDC's involvement in using technology to support career services in Northern Saskatchewan, we have developed a vision of expanding the application of technology to education, commerce, health, and other services. For this reason, the Board of KCDC approved the submission of a proposal to Industry Canada for funding under the Smart Communities program. KCDC staff prepared this proposal, which gained wide support from Northern Saskatchewan communities and agencies. In May 2000, Industry Canada chose KCDC's Headwaters Project proposal as the demonstration project for the province of Saskatchewan. KCDC is now looking forward to the challenge of implementing this project. We also are planning to continue our support of the Northern Career Services network of counsellors.
